5 Movies for the Month of Love

Nobody Wants This (2024; season 2 coming in 2025)
This romantic comedy series centers on an unlikely relationship between an outspoken, agnostic woman, Joanne (Kristen Bell), and an unconventional rabbi, Noah (Adam Brody). Available on Netflix.
What we love about it: This series challenges the stereotypes and preconceptions we tend to hold toward those we perceive as different from ourselves. The moments of vulnerability the couple share makes the story universal.

The Lovebirds (2020)
This romantic comedy stars Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani as a couple who go on the run after witnessing a murder. Rated R for language, sexual content, and violence. Available on Netflix.
What we love about it: While the movie earned average ratings, Rae and Nanjiani’s onscreen connection pulls you in, and their banter – much of it improvised – is laugh-out-loud funny.

Modern Love (2019-21)
This rom com anthology series is based on the New York Times weekly column of the same name. It explores love in many forms – sexual, romantic, familial, platonic, and self-love. The first season features love stories that take place in New York City. The second season includes a few episodes set in other places. Its star-studded cast includes Jane Alexander, Tina Fey, Andy Garcia, Dev Patel, John Slattery, and Anne Hathaway. Available on Prime Video.
What we love about it: Each of these stories, inspired by real-life essays that appeared in the column, is a fresh take on the joys and heartaches of love.

Enough Said (2013)
Starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Eva, a divorced masseuse who begins a relationship with Albert (James Gandolfini), this movie explores what happens when she discovers he is the ex-husband of her client and friend Marianne (Catherine Keener). Available for rent on Apple TV, Google Play Movies, and Amazon Prime Video.
What we love about it: This movie portrays the real risk of putting your heart out there. Includes some bittersweet notes.

It’s Complicated (2008)
This rom com stars Meryl Streep, who starts an affair with her ex-husband (Alec Baldwin), then finds herself drawn to another man, her architect (Steve Martin).
What we love about it: This movie explores the fun and hilarious complications of mature sexual passion.
