History of pride month
What is Pride month?
Pride is an annual celebration of the many contributions made by the LGBTQ+ community to history, society and cultures worldwide. It is celebrated during the month of June in cities across the world and is generally tied to the Stonewall Uprisings in New York City.
What are the Stonewall Uprisings?
On June 28, 1969, police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay club in Greenwich Village, inciting a riot among bar patrons and neighborhood residents. It led to five more days of protests and violent clashes with law enforcement and catalyzed the gay rights movement in the US and world.
The Stonewall riots weren’t the first time that the LGBTQ+ community took a stand against harassment from law enforcement. It did, however, inspire Pride Month and the Gay Pride Parade in June of 1970 and beyond. To read more about the Stonewall Riots visit our bookstore.
